\u2043 Some ways to save money on products are to sign up for brands email lists or social media pages to be alerted about sales.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
– Use these EWG databases to check each ingredient in products! Some products are given an overall score, but those can be misleading, so best to check each ingredient separately. I have already checked all for the products I list below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

More info at the bottom of this page.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n Liquid hand soap: Alaffia black soap (note that it is a brown color. It is very affordable and available on Amazon or Thrive market. It can be added with water to foaming dispensers as well. I looked for clear liquid soaps and couldn\u2019t find any with a low enough level of toxic ingredients. Castile soap is good toxicity-wise but some people say it dries their skin and\/ or clogs their drains. Some say that different brands might be less drying than others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Foaming hand soap: Meliora<\/a>, or Moon Valley Organics unscented: https:\/\/amzn.to\/3rNksqU<\/a> <\/p>\n\n\n\n Shampoo: Carina Organics and I highly recommend it<\/a>! The best value I\u2019ve seen is to purchase directly from their website. Other options that look good but I haven\u2019t tried are: Living Libations, Evolph, and Luminance, but those are all very expensive. Bubble and Bee also makes shampoo but not conditioner. Their bubble bath can also be used as shampoo and contains natural citric acid that isn\u2019t harmful. It\u2019s hard to find shampoo and conditioner options that don\u2019t contain citric acid, and these are some of the only ones without it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Bar Soap: Meliora<\/a>, Bubble and Bee, Booda, and Lusa are organic brands that don\u2019t have palm oil (which is bad for the environment and animals), but they are all $6-7 each bar (other brands are even more!). Moon Valley Organics is a little cheaper but I think they all have Essential oils. Chagrin Valley looks like they have one I\u2019d use, but it\u2019s $9. Alaffia makes a bar with only two ingredients: https:\/\/amzn.to\/3H4sfXx<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n Some brands offer discounts for bars without boxes (which also makes them even more eco friendly) or imperfectly cut\/ scrap pieces. Bar soaps are a more green option because they have a lower shipping weight, avoid plastic bottles, and avoid preservatives needed in liquid products. They also last a long time! Use the hyperlink and code CGTF for a 10% discount.<\/p>\n\n\n\n I previously used an Edwin Jagger Safety razor but it was scary to use on my knees and ankles. Rose Hip is another alternative to retinol.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Baby wash and products: Carina Organics, Earth Mama (organic), Max & Madeleine foaming baby wash.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Bubble bath: Poofy Organics, Every day Shea, Allaffia, California Baby.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Kids shampoo, body wash and bubble bath: Carina Organics or Alaffia<\/a> (this is not organic but great ingredients and very affordable).<\/p>\n\n\n\n Hand sanitizer: Honest Company Free and Clear Spray: https:\/\/amzn.to\/3qUe69Y<\/a>. Dr. Bronners is a good one too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Kids Toothbrush: Radius. Amazon Affiliate link: https:\/\/amzn.to\/3tWqbNC<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n Toothpaste: This was one of the deepest and darkest rabbit holes to research, because there was no light at the end of the tunnel. All toothpastes contain at least one ingredient that some people think is problematic: glycerin, xylitol, silica, bentonite, calcium carbonate, essential oils, and not to mention, fluoride. See my Toothpaste Guide<\/a> <\/strong>for more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Floss: Radius https:\/\/amzn.to\/3ogXKXl<\/a> or Desert Essence. Almost all other brands contain PFAS chemicals. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Deodorant: I used to make my own, which is a #moneysavingtip because the best non-toxic deodorants can be expensive, and I estimate that making it myself only costs a few dollars, even with organic ingredients. I\u2019ve also had some success with simply dipping a wet finger into baking soda and patting that onto underarm. I\u2019ve grown tired of doing that and discovered more reasonably priced \u201cbest\u201d options. Check out my deodorant guide post<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n These days I\u2019m only buying deodorant that don\u2019t contain arrowroot or zinc oxide, which can contain lead. I tried the two with the most organic ingredients: Island Deodorant original: https:\/\/amzn.to\/4bprR5R<\/a> (note that their sensitive formulas contain arrowroot) and Pure Pitz (not on Amazon). They both work great despite being unscented.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Another that contain some organic ingredients is Just Ingredients<\/a> (af link; also use discount code cleangreentoxicantfree), which doesn\u2019t contain baking soda or any starches and isn\u2019t on Amazon. I had my husband try it. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Agent Nateur also has some organic ingredients https:\/\/amzn.to\/49bzOts<\/a>. I might try Agent Nateur next because it has scented options, and contains baking soda which works well for me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Magsol isn\u2019t organic but works well and doesn\u2019t contain baking soda or any starches: https:\/\/amzn.to\/495nE5a<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Others I have tried for women that work well but do contain arrowroot are: Earth Mama https:\/\/amzn.to\/3PNjXaU<\/a> (worked pretty well but got crumbly) or Pretty Frank https:\/\/amzn.to\/3SXewc3<\/a>. Earthley mineral formula look good, but the \u201cplus\u201d version has clay in it, which is highly risky for lead. I tried the Truvani deodorant which has good ingredients but didn\u2019t work well for me. Meow Meow Tweet also looks pretty good. But all the options in this paragraph contain arrowroot or zinc oxide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Here are the most non-toxic and lead-free options for men: Island Deodorant: https:\/\/amzn.to\/4bqsnAz<\/a>, Agent Nateur:https:\/\/amzn.to\/3ubdDEQ<\/a>, Magsol: https:\/\/amzn.to\/3vPIUxD<\/a>, Pure Pitz (not on Amazon), and Just Ingredients<\/a> (not on Amazon but you can use code cleangreentoxicantfree for a 20% discount). All are explained above.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Options for men that contain arrowroot (explained above) are Pit Liquor (not available on Amazon) and Pretty Frank has some scents that may be appealing to men: https:\/\/amzn.to\/3SvOKga<\/a>. Some \u201cnatural\u201d brands I DO NOT consider non toxic are: Oars and Alps, Dr.Squatch, Native, Every Man Jack, Primally Pure, Jack Henry, Attitude, etc.<\/p>\n\n\n\n If you get irritation from \u201cnatural\u201d deodorants, it\u2019s probably from the baking soda. Take a break (formulas or recipes that use organic cornstarch or arrowroot instead make a good substitute) and try again when your skin recovers. I also make sure that right after shaving, I avoid using ones with baking soda until the next morning, or I apply plain Shea butter first.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Toilet paper: See my toilet paper post<\/a>. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Makeup: Poofy Organic<\/a>s or Au Naturale. You want a closed HEPA system. Previously I had a Dyson: https:\/\/amzn.to\/34dGpY7<\/a> but here is a Shark I got that works just as well: https:\/\/amzn.to\/3H7mUi9<\/a>. A tip for the Dyson is to clean the filters periodically; if you don\u2019t, it will seem like the battery doesn\u2019t last long.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Dish soap: Unfortunately it hard to find a perfect dish soap that isn\u2019t super expensive. Meliora makes a plastic-free bar soap kind that I haven\u2019t tried. <\/strong>I am using Planet dish soap https:\/\/amzn.to\/41QDr5O<\/a>. It has SLS but I use gloves. There are a few dish soaps with perfect ingredients but they are $20 ish dollars: Monterra Natural Dish Soap, Poofy Organics Dishwashing Liquid, and Pure Haven Home Dish Soap.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Dishwasher detergent: See my comments on this post<\/a>. I\u2019m currently using Blueland https:\/\/amzn.to\/4amgJ9x<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Scrubby pad for washing dishes: https:\/\/amzn.to\/484RupI<\/a>. See my blog post on cleaning and disinfecting<\/a><\/strong> for more information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Rubber cleaning gloves: If You Care brand from Amazon. Avoid vinyl\/ PVC gloves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n All purpose cleaner: Meliora, Branch Basics<\/a>, vinegar (provides light disinfection but not heavy duty), or dish soap and water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Laundry detergent: Meliora, (comes in an eco friendly cardboard container with metal scoop), or Branch Basics<\/a>. Molly\u2019s Suds has good ingredients, but doesn\u2019t contain any actual detergent\/ soap ingredients and has sea salt, which always contains lead. Some people think it isn\u2019t a concern because it might just wash out, but I\u2019d rather just find a detergent that doesn\u2019t have any. A benefit of powder detergent because I read that the liquid ones always need preservatives added, and they aren\u2019t as green in terms of a higher shipping footprint because of the additional weight of the water. Branch Basics avoids both of those products. I\u2019ve also read that the powdered kinds have different enzymes that are more effective at preventing funky odors. A mold expert told me to avoid all enzymes though. Here are more detergents<\/a> from a trusted blogger and even more recommendations<\/a>, although I haven\u2019t checked to see if the criteria is as stringent as I would like on the second link.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Dryer sheets: don\u2019t use dryer sheets for both eco and toxicity reasons. Here are alternatives<\/a>. I use ethical, adorable wool dryer balls from Friendsheep (https:\/\/amzn.to\/3MV67SQ<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n Oxygen cleaner (similar to Oxiclean): Branch Basics<\/a> Oxygen Boost. This is the only oxygen cleaner I\u2019ve seen with no additional additives. A tip is that oxygen cleaner is the basis of most products sold as washing machine cleaner<\/a> or laundry stripper. This link<\/a> explains what\u2019s wrong with Oxiclean and how to make it yourself. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Laundry stain remover: Branch Basics<\/a>. Hydrogen peroxide mixed with Castile or dish soap works well, but HP is hard to find and expensive these days so I\u2019m on the lookout for a new stain removing spray. I saw Puracy had rave reviews but then looked up the ingredients and I\u2019m not comfortable with it. A note about borax: It\u2019s controversial; some people love it but some say it\u2019s not safe especially around kids, so I don\u2019t use it at all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Disinfectant: Food grade hydrogen peroxide or Force of Nature<\/a>. *Full disclosure is this Force of Nature link gets you $10, and also grants me $10 off my future purchases. This is made from reclaimed wood scraps, and is a green and non-toxic choice that also avoids allergen\/ pesticide issues with using food-based litters made from corn, wheat, etc. Clay cat litter contains lead and is horrible for the environment and health, despite heavy marketing about being all natural (great example that natural isn\u2019t always safe). Okocat has a warning on the box about wood dust bring carcinogenic, but that only applies to heavy exposures, such as occupations that work constantly around wood dust without proper protection.
